Case study Staffordshire University The Results Security to ensure performance for the long run " It used to take at least a full day to detect, investigate, and mitigate an incident; now it takes 10 minutes." James Hall Cybersecurity Analyst Staffordshire University "We were surprised by how easy it was to deploy Umbrella, but even more surprised to see it immediately began blocking some 1,000 malware and phishing sites per day, a volume we're not resourced to handle," says Mark Hewitt. "It was an eye-opener." Umbrella's expanded visibility and detailed reporting have strengthened the University's security practice. "We can now see things we never knew were there, and the Active Directory integration pinpoints issues down to the user and device," says Cybersecurity Analyst James Hall. "It used to take at least a full day to detect, investigate, and mitigate an incident; now it takes 10 minutes." Mark Hewitt credits Umbrella with reducing phishing at the university, previously the network's most common cyberattack. "Umbrella has led to a substantial reduction in phishing. It immediately blocks known phishing URLs and then reports alerts us to the users who've clicked on malicious links. We use the alerts to identify malicious emails that our email filters have missed and then refine our email rules to block future phishing emails. In one recent month alone, Umbrella blocked access to 40K URLs which might otherwise have required significant resources to resolve," he says. "Similarly, Umbrella detected external sites infected with MageCart that skimmed credit card details of users who accessed them. By blocking access and directly counseling any users who visited them on our network before the block was enacted, we were able prevent credit card fraud," says Mark Hewitt. "Through Umbrella, we were also able to reinforce our connection to the community by alerting local businesses whose sites had been compromised by MageCart." "Cisco Umbrella is now the first line of defense to secure our vital internal data and ward off potential damage to our user community and institutional reputation caused by a cyberattack," says Emily Hampson. "We've been able to enhance our Prevent Duty compliance and it's ultimately helping us make the internet safer for everyone connected to the Connected University." © 2019 Cisco and/or its affiliates.
