Case study Axcess Financial The Challenge Protecting sensitive data against targeted attacks Since opening its first retail store in 1994, Axcess Financial has grown into a financial lending industry leader with nearly 1,000 retail locations across the U.S. supported by international operational facilities—and serviced 50 million loans along the way. As impressive as those numbers may be, such success is not without its downside. "The financial sector is always vulnerable to malicious activity, because our business necessitates the handling of vast quantities of personally identifiable information (PII) such as social security numbers and other sensitive credit data," says Tony Hynes, the company's director of IT security. "Our primary focus on consumer lending makes Axcess an especially attractive target for malware, ransomware, phishing and other threats." Spurred by an uptick in spear-phishing attempts, Axcess sought to strengthen its security infrastructure against increasingly insidious attacks on its network and employees. "We had to move beyond standard products that only react to malware as it enters the network. We also needed to replace our existing proxy solution as we were unable to get it fully deployed and it couldn't address all of our needs," he says. "We were looking for a truly advanced solution to proactively prevent incidents wherever possible and let us effectively respond to any incidents." Objective With spear-phishing, ransomware and other attacks on the rise, consumer lender Axcess Financial wanted to strengthen its ability to prevent incidents from happening and to effectively respond to incidents if they should happen. By implementing a secure internet gateway in conjunction with next-gen endpoint security, Axcess secured access to the internet wherever users go, reduced its exposure to malware and improved the ability to detect, respond and remediate when necessary. Solution Cisco Umbrella Cisco AMP for Endpoints Impact • Significantly reduced malware and ransomware by 75 percent • Reduced time to detection from several weeks or in some cases months to under four hours • Cut remediation time by 99% • Bolstered security for on- and off-network users © 2019 Cisco and/or its affiliates.
