All rights reserved. Phishing is the top cause of security breaches in Europe. With over 90% of cyber-attacks starting with a phishing email, there is an urgent need for European businesses to strengthen their attack defences. Phishing and related threats were the number one security concern in the UK, Germany, France, the Netherlands and Belgium. 1 78% 1 have dealt with a security incident originating with a deceptive email, with nearly half experiencing an incident more than once. It is also in the top three attack types CISOs experience. 2 13% 2 admitted that phishing attacks resulted in a direct loss of data at their organisations. Concern about user behaviour (e.g., clicking malicious links in email or websites) remains high and is now the top concern for CISOs. Phishing had by far the highest success rate of any threat vector. 3 During the last year, it was the primary weapon in almost a third (32%) 3 of all data breaches. What exactly is phishing? Let's break it down: Phishing is the fraudulent attempt to obtain sensitive information such as usernames, passwords and credit card details by disguising oneself as a trustworthy entity. Phishing attacks can come in the form of instant messages, fake emails, or even through mimicking legitimate websites. Spear phishing uses personal information about the target to increase their chance at success. Notable victim: Hillary Clinton's 2016 presidential campaign. Whaling are spear phishing attacks that are targeted specifically at high-profile individuals and senior executives. Continued ►
