The challenge Balancing agility with security in a complex, global organization Solving complex business problems for global organizations requires global expertise. As a Fortune 50, $50-billion-a-year company, Cisco is tasked with securing 140,000 employees and contractors in 140 countries on a network with more than 2.5 million IPs active at any given moment. "Our company's ability to successfully innovate hinges on access to the tools and data on our global network. Whether they're here on our network at Cisco, or working in a customer's office, the airport, or a coffee shop, all our systems must remain secure and the sensitive data our customers entrust us with must be protected," says Steve Martino, Cisco's vice president and chief information security officer (CISO). Information security architect, Rich West, of the Cisco Information Security team grasps the value of securing the remote workforce. "Many infections happen when devices aren't on the network, and we're seeing increasingly that more users are working off-network, so we needed a robust solution to better protect them." That solution had to be able to withstand both the growth of the remote workforce, and the less predictable spurts brought on by the numerous acquisitions that have helped Cisco become the worldwide leader it is today. Says Martino, "We are constantly acquiring companies, many of which are targeted for attacks as soon as we announce the acquisition. Those entities typically have in place a security stack with its own set of technology capabilities, so we have to move extremely quickly to give them the same powerful protection that safeguards Cisco and our clients." " Many infections happen when devices aren't on the network, and we're seeing increasingly that more users are working off-network, so we needed a robust solution to better protect them."
