"When I first saw what Umbrella could do, well before Cisco's acquisition of OpenDNS, it seemed like a robust, commercial version of our internal work, and the way it combined simplicity with scalability made total sense for an operation like ours whose half-million endpoints generate some five-to-six billion DNS queries a day," says Martino. "We knew it would solve a lot of problems," says West. "Umbrella's DNS focus means it's highly effective, lightweight, and works on and off-network. It's also very, very preventative, which was a good fit with a development approach that believes an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure and favors investment in preventative versus reactive solutions. What's more, with its integrability within the Cisco platform, it's a force multiplier." "Ultimately, we're looking for the best solution to the business problem at hand," says Dave Schwartzberg, information security architect in Cisco Information Security. Umbrella also offered a way to swiftly and cost-effectively apply uniform security to each new acquisition regardless of legacy infrastructure. "The beauty of the Umbrella solution is that every single device within an organization uses DNS and performs DNS queries, so the DNS shield can be placed in front of the acquired entity no matter what's in an existing security stack," says West. "We have a security solution we can always add on easily and quickly." Umbrella delivered another unexpected win: "The rollout of Roaming Client - which is integrated with AnyConnect - was a rousing success," says West. "We had 78,000 seats installed within a week and 100,000 seats installed in 2 weeks. We only worked 3 installation related cases, and our QA process was streamlined."
