The challenge Protecting Big Data beyond network borders As the modern platform for machine learning and analytics optimized for the cloud, Cloudera transforms vast amounts of complex data into clear and actionable insights to help some of the world's largest healthcare, financial services, insurance, public sector, and other enterprises solve their most challenging business problems. Protecting that data—much of it highly sensitive, personally identifiable, and subject to regulation—is Cloudera CISO Eddie Garcia's top priority. "Quick and easy access to cloud-based applications helps our remote workforce achieve agility, however, moving our borders out from behind traditional firewalls can create new and serious security risks by exposing the intellectual property, proprietary information, and other confidential data we work with to the internet," he said. "The more we worked in the cloud, the more tedious and less effective our traditional role-based access controls grew," said Vincent Parras, infosec programs manager at Cloudera. "We lacked a means to precisely identify the information and our users' activity in the cloud, and such a manual approach did not scale properly with the disparate types of services we use." The solution A line of sight into the cloud "We weren't gaining the insights that we needed with the tools we had," said Garcia. "We realized we needed more visibility into our cloud applications to ensure data integrity, and we needed to replace the continual hunt for multiple dashboards across siloed applications with a centralized view." Cloudlock offered Cloudera unmatched visibility. "It allows us to instantly identify where our gaps are, and how we're sharing and collaborating with files, without expending the time and resources to manually pull that data," said Garcia. "No other solution could aggregate different datasets from various cloud tools like Salesforce and Google into a single view and integrated well with our own internal Cloudera Cybersecurity clusters based on Apache Spot." It also supported Cloudera's data loss prevention (DLP) efforts. "By continuously monitoring the cloud, Cloudlock could expedite any needed remediation by automatically pinpointing and notifying the team of any confidential or restricted file sharing in violation of our policies," said Garcia. "Its out-of-band functionality spares users any direct interaction, so we could visualize what the users are doing without interrupting their work to notify them, and Cloudlock does not impose any performance impacts on our customers' or employees' workloads," said Parras. " By continuously monitoring the cloud, Cloudlock could expedite any needed remediation by automatically pinpointing and notifying the team of any confidential or restricted file sharing in violation of our policies."
